Mathilda – works at her family coffeehouse, friend and coworker died suddenly
Mother – protective, hardworking and angry
Grandfather – has parrot, was a soldier, joyous and shows Mattie love, gossip
Eliza – black lady who was freed by her husband, but he died before she could buy his freedom, cook in the coffeehouse


Setting –
1793, later summer (August) Philadelphia
Coffeehouse – people meet there to gossip, drink coffee or tea and not spirits (alcohol), play cards or gamble
Rotten pile of coffeebeans, rats etc. conditions that were prime for the spread of disease
